Rosemary has been a camper with CRA since 2018, and her family first learned about CRA through the Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry. When talking with Rosemary’s mom, Elizabeth, she says, “Rosemary started attending day camps and they were the highlight of her summer. She felt right at home with the counselors and other kids, doing really cool things and having FUN
Everyone went above and beyond to keep her safe,” Elizabeth explains, “It was an incredible gift to know that you all could take care of her because you offered such extensive support. Rosemary isn’t often included in different activities of typically developing children, but YOU DID IT! She could be included at Camp Rise Above and I could completely relax to rejuvenate myself. Camp was life-changing for me too!
In addition to having Down syndrome, Rosemary’s mom explains that she also “has a very restricted diet and it is a Herculean effort to make sure Rosemary’s needs are met and she is kept safe every day.” Rosemary’s latest accomplishment is returning to school after two years of homeschooling. Despite her medical needs and challenges, Rosemary challenges herself to practice her independence skills away from her family. Rosemary has spread her wings to fly and she is a natural in the air. She continues to make a way for herself in the world every day. We are so proud of Rosemary!
In 2018, Rosemary first attended day camp with CRA, where she had a sense of independence and could be herself. “Going to day camp was really the beginning of her independence in the larger world” explained Elizabeth, Rosemary’s mom. She tried so many new things and had so many new experiences! She was especially fond of the archery and fishing experiences. Through camp, Rosemary was able to have experiences she never would have had otherwise.
This past summer, Rosemary attended overnight camp for the first time! This was something once thought impossible for Rosemary. Elizabeth, her mom, said, “I was terrified to send her out into the world without me.” Leading up to camp, Rosemary worked incredibly hard to become more independent as she counted down the days until camp. “She was super excited,” Elizabeth explained. With her counselor by her side, Rosemary was able to try new things, to challenge herself, and develop a new sense of self and independence. “Camp changed Rosemary’s life. She came home a different child. She saw that could be independent in the world without mom.
