Since 2013, Camp Rise Above has provided free camp experiences for children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges. In 2021, we realized our dream to provide week-long, overnight camps for our campers in a place built specifically to best serve their needs. while continuing to host day camps in the Charleston area. In 2022, we are planning for another successful summer with options for everyone!
2022 OVERNIGHT SESSIONS
Two overnight sessions will be offered at Camp Cole in 2022. While each session will be open to all the populations we serve, below are the suggested populations for each week. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, with registration preference for previous campers.
**THIS SESSION IS FULL AND ON A WAITLIST** June 20-24: Children with asthma, sickle cell, cerebral palsy, autism, brain tumors and their siblings, cerebral palsy, and cystic fibrosis.
**THIS SESSION IS FULL AND ON A WAITLIST** June 27-July 1: Children with Down syndrome, craniofacial differences, epilepsy, Tourette’s, traumatic brain injury, heart and kidney diseases, transplant recipients, autoimmune disorders, and cystic fibrosis.
2022 Day Camp Sessions
We will host two day-camp sessions at James Island County Park for our campers that are unable or don’t qualify for our overnight camps. These sessions are not population specific; families can choose the session that works best for them:
July 18-19 and July 21-22 at James Island County Park
Announcing our first Young Adult Weekend!!
August 4-7 at Camp Cole, and open to campers age 19 and up. Follows the same restrictions and requirements as our overnight camp sessions. This program is intended for individuals who have special needs that restrict them from serving as counselors as they age out of programming, such as individuals with developmental delays, autism, and other challenges.
WHO CAN ATTEND OVERNIGHT CAMP?
We are excited to open the overnight camp sessions for campers that meet the following qualifications:
- ages 7 to 18 (we are planning a Young Adult camp weekend for individuals ages 19 and up at the end of the summer),
- can perform the following tasks independently:
- feed oneself,
- use the restroom, without accidents,
- bathe oneself, and
- can communicate, either verbally or with a device.
- does not present an elopement risk (i.e., will not run off at every opportunity without regard to safety)
- have age appropriate vaccines as recommended by the American Association of Pediatrics (see the Camp Rise Above Immunization Policy for more details)
If the overnight sessions are not a good fit for your camper, we may be able to serve them with our day camps at James Island County Park. Day campers can be ages 5-18 (possibly older if it is deemed a good fit by both parties).
WHAT POPULATIONS QUALIFY FOR CRA?
Our mission is to serve populations of campers that would otherwise not be able to attend camp due to their diagnoses. If your camper has a rare diagnosis that you don’t see below, please reach out to us to see if CRA is a good fit for him/her. In 2022, we will serve children and young adults with:
- Sickle Cell Anemia
- Down syndrome
- Cerebral Palsy
- Craniofacial Differences
- Heart and Kidney Diseases
- Brain tumors (and their siblings)
- Transplant recipients
- Auto-immune disorders
- Cystic fibrosis (one camper allowed per session)
WHAT IS CAMP COLE?
Camp Cole, in Eastover, SC, is a camp and retreat facility for people of all abilities to enjoy. With cabins, a zero-entry pool, a lake for water activities, therapeutic horseback riding and more, this beautiful property is a special place for our campers to call home each summer. To learn more about Camp Cole and their story, please visit their website! Camp Rise Above is proud to be one of the inaugural partners with Camp Cole.
HOW MUCH DOES CAMP COST?
We have always offered our programs completely free of charge to our families, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and supporters. Our camps will continue to be free in 2022.
Due to the nature of the overnight camps and the increased cost of this exciting program, we invite families who are able to help support us to do so, or to host fundraisers to encourage their friends and family to help support their camper’s experience! There will be a sliding scale of options for how much a family is comfortable contributing, and “camperships” to support any child’s wish to attend. No camper will be turned away due to inability to pay. We strongly believe that ALL children deserve to experience the magic of camp. Please call Erin with any questions or concerns about registration.
