Counselor FAQs: Summer 2022

What does a counselor do at camp?

Counselors are the backbone of our programming! As a counselor, you will be assigned to 1 or 2 (or possibly 3) campers and be part of a larger group. You will ensure the safety of your campers while participating in traditional camp activities, while encouraging campers to tray new things, grow in confidence, and connect with others. Your job is to have fun!

What are the requirements for counselors?

Counselors must be at least 18 years old, complete online Darkness to Light training, pass a background check, and attend the appropriate orientation/training for their sessions. Oh, they should also like working with kids and being outside. That’s it!

Can I volunteer at all the sessions?

Why yes! Thank you for asking. You can work at one session, all four sessions, or anything in between. We do ask that you commit to the entire session(s) for which you apply as you will be with the same campers the whole time.

What are the orientations and trainings for the different sessions?

Overnight session counselors will undergo a virtual training in the spring, and have access to the counselor handbook well before camp. These counselors arrive at Camp Cole the day before campers (Sundays June 19 and June 26) for training and setup.

For day camp sessions in July, volunteers will have a 3-4 hour virtual training to go over programming, safety, and learn about their campers.

But what about COVID?

We are working with the American Camp Association and CDC to ensure we follow the best practices and guidelines to keep our campers and volunteers safe. Right now, this plan includes distancing, cohorts, prescreening, vaccine requirements, and more. Visit to see our updates. All volunteers agree to follow and uphold safety guidelines throughout camp programs.

Can I volunteer for just one day?

We occasionally have the need for daily volunteers. Please reach out to Erin directly at for inquiries.

I am a medical professional and would like to volunteer on the medical team. Is there a way to do that?

You bet! We need many medical professionals to keep our campers safe. Medical volunteers may apply on the same page as counselors- simply choose the “Medical Team” option instead of counselors. If you’d like to discuss how you could best serve, please email Erin at

Do I need to pay for my background check?

We do not require current students to pay for their background checks. For all others, we ask that if you are able, you cover the cost (usually $18.50). If you feel called and are able to support our mission with a donation, you can do so on our website or during your application process. Please note: if paying this service is prohibitive, you can absolutely still apply! Thank you!
